About The Event

Cantor Barbara Ostfeld is the first ordained woman cantor in Jewish history,  the first female cantorial graduate of the Reform movement’s Hebrew Union College School of Sacred Music in 1975. Her candid, brilliant, poignant memoir discusses her personal, emotional, and professional struggles and triumphs from childhood to maturity, finding her true calling in the Jewish world and shattering the glass ceiling for women to be leaders in synagogue life in a field that formerly restricted women from participation. Thanks to her courage and tenacity, women now make up over 50% of the cantorial profession in both Reform and Conservative Judaism.
