Our Mission

Books2Connect promotes literacy and enhances self-esteem by expanding the horizons of young readers through the gift of books. Books2Connect searches for new and gently-used books to distribute to children and encourage them to build their own home libraries, in an effort to create a foundation for life-long learning.

How

Books2Connect seeks donations of children's books from individuals as well as through book drives run by organizations such as honor societies, sports teams, key clubs and other service organizations. Books2Connect is also a great project for individuals looking to fulfill community service requirements.

Why

Although Connecticut is one of the wealthiest states in the country, nearly one in ten children live in poverty. For many families, books are a luxury item that parents cannot afford, and children who live near the poverty line have lower reading scores. According to the National Center for Family Literacy, children who lack early exposure to reading not only struggle in school but are at high risk for substance abuse, teen pregnancy and delinquency. Studies have shown that being read to as a child and having books in the home are the two most important indicators of academic success.
